Arlen Solochek

Arlen Solochek, FAIA

Arlen Solochek, FAIA, is an independent consulting architect, with special skills and interests in design/construction industry contract analysis, forensic investigation, and claims, facility programming, Higher Education facility design & construction, public entity design and construction procurement, and alternative project delivery for construction services. He recently retired as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Capital Planning and Special Projects at Maricopa County Community College District, after nearly 30 years of service in progressive roles in leadership and management. His group planned and led capital bond programs valued at more than $1.5 billion, adding over 4 million sf of new facilities.

He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and served more than a decade on the AIA Documents Committee, the group that writes and updates design and construction industry contracts and forms that you love to hate. He was Task Group Chair for the 2017 update of AIA’s A201 General Conditions of the Contract, a keystone document for AIA and the A/E/C industry. He also co-chaired the Task Groups that updated the Construction Manager Constructor and Construction Manager Advisor document families.

He serves on Building Design + Construction Magazine's editorial advising board, and on the Advisory Committee for AIA’s Project Delivery Knowledge Community. He has presented or been a featured speaker at the national AIA Conventions, AIA live webinars, State of Arizona Energy Management Conference, Arizona American Public Works Association/Arizona Society of Civil Engineers, Arizona Construction Excellence (ACE), Society for Marketing Professional Services, and Construction Owners Association of America, as well as serving on a number of design and facilities award juries.

He is an Arizona Registered Architect and graduate of Arizona State University, with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Master's degree in Business Administration.

Educational objectives:

  • The objective will be to discuss how specifications have to change to reflect the construction delivery method being used.
  • Review a couple of delivery models so that people are aware of what they look like and how roles/responsibilities/relationships between parties’ change.
  • Discussion on what makes up the Contract (where specs, etc. fit in.)
  • What submittals are and what they are not.
  • Extended discussion about the increased cooperation (at least on paper) between the design and construction team.
  • The difference/changes/evolution/continuum between informal involvement, Design Assist, Delegated Design, and full design/build.
  • Examples of spec sections that need to be added or expanded based upon these issues, new language in the AIA General Conditions, etc.
