 January 2012 Cactus Comments Newsletter

Welcome to the January 2012 issue of the CSI Phoenix Chapter Cactus Comments.  We are experimenting with a new format. The email sent on the first of the month (typically!) will be more of a digest. You can skim the articles and click on the ones you want to read. Or you can come to the web site to the monthly newsletter page and see of the articles. All articles will be archived on the site.

Our goal with this change is to make the newsletter less bulky. We’ve been running 30+ pages with lots of forms and flyers in addition to the articles. We want to trim it down.  We also want to increase traffic on the web site. This site should be the hub of all Chapter activities.

What do you think?  Give us your feedback at webmaster@CSIphoenix.org

Presenter:  Rob Turton P.E., S.E. Biography

Program Description:
This crossing of the Colorado River relocates highway traffic between the states of Nevada and Arizona from the crest of the historic Hoover Dam to a new high-speed bypass nearly 900 feet above the Colorado River.  The new concrete arch is the longest in North America and the fourth longest in the world.  The design of the bridge takes advantage of the best features of concrete and steel, blending these two high performance materials into an efficient and effective composite design that enhances the performance as well as the constructability of the bridge.  This presentation will provide a brief overview of the project and describe the planning, design, and construction of the river bridge, the crown jewel of the bypass.

By Tim Garver, CSI, CDT – Phoenix Chapter Media Communications Committee Chairman

Welcome to CSI Phoenix Chapter Forums!

The Chapter considered a CSI Phoenix Chapter LinkedIn Group page, but decided on a local public forum about construction specifications and the Phoenix Chapter.

Refer to the screenshot below.  CSI Phoenix members already have a login with access to our online Member Roster as well as Forums access.  Non-members are welcome to browse the Forums anonymously or register and submit their own posts.

We have some very good topics, please join the discussions.

By Tim Garver, CSI, CDT – Phoenix Chapter Media Communications Committee Chairman

I joined CSI’s LinkedIn Group to keep up with what’s going on at Institute and engage in topics of discussion with CSI members in and out of our Phoenix Chapter.

See the screenshot below for a recent, and very important posting by Joy Davis, CSI, CCPR, - Communications & Web Community Manager at CSI.

While logged in at LinkedIn, search Groups for CSI group name.  I highly recommend joining; see you there!

Instead of conventional primers, block fillers are often used as the first coat to fill the voids of concrete masonry units (CMU) and create a surface suitable for painting.

How Does Spec Writing Work? - Introduction
By: David Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA

The answer to this question first depends on whether you are approaching the task from an architectural or engineering world view. Why? These two viewpoints, while being used on the same project, have vastly different presuppositions. Yet they often lead to similar (and by that I mean repetitive and painful) outcomes.

Have You Thought About Advertising?
Look What’s New – Advertising Rates CSI Phoenix Chapter Newsletter and Web site

You know CSI is a good investment. Now you can share CSI with others who haven’t yet experienced the benefits of membership.
