The Technical Committee is considering aligning with the Education Committee to create ongoing paints and coatings seminars. Is this something of interest? If so, what would you like to know (i.e. basic paint composition, problems/solutions, what should I use where?) Provide some suggestions.

    Tim:

Why is paint so "complicated"? There are a myriad of products and systems and each manufacturer has their recommendation. Keeping the Schedule of Products portion of our specification up to date is time consuming... and... in many cases we can't verify that the products that we have listed are really comparable. Is there a solution?

In my opinion, I would minimize the number of manufacturers/products listed in the Schedule of Products to make it more manageable or use one to establish a basis of design and allow others only if they can meet the basis of design.

The education committee did a paint seminar 10 - 15 years ago. It was well recieved and a lot of great information came out of it. It would be good to see some newer seminars or programs on paints and coatings. We have had some problems on one of my projects with painting with semi-gloss paints and the tracking in it. It has been hard to find subs that can do a good job applying it. It woul be nice to hear whats new in the industry and how to solve some of the application problems with 0 VOC coatings.

Thank you Neil for your post.

The Technical Committee has thought about this subject matter and will revisit the topic.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the tracking in it". Please clarify.

Neil, Thank you for clearing up the term tracking, aka roller marks. Sounds like the paint is setting up quicker, since it's zero VOC, and no additional solvents have been added to extend the open time to get the paint applied properly.

In addition, find a manufacturer that puts effort into formulating a zero VOC with better than average flow and leveling.
